Our 6 Point Plan focuses on issues that have been identified through years of community involvement and conversations. They are just some of our GreenSlide plan - the rest comes from you. Your needs, wants, concerns and ideas is what an effective Councillor should be taking onboard and representing at a higher level.
To enact real change, it takes a village! It takes a movement of people from all walks and wheels of life, who are passionate about moving our suburbs forward, but never losing sight of our past.
What makes us unique? That's a question I have often asked myself and I keep coming back to a couple of things.
1. Our connection to the Bay and its rich history, especially with our First Nations Peoples, the water and the past history of the Bay, through organisations like the Wynnum Manly Historical Society and just as importantly, through the stories of those who have lived here for so long.
2. The close knit community. I witnessed this first hand back in 2018, when I went through chemo. The community rallied around my family and my shop.
What a beautiful thing to be a witness to and a passionate and caring community to be part of.
Stay awesome, stay kind.
We want to connect with existing organisations to provide a designated Youth Centre. A place where it's designed for kids of all ages - rock climbing wall, graffiti wall, gym, basketball court, event space and more. Taking away funding from existing organisations, is not what we want to do. Instead, we want to work with local big businesses to fund the space over a 4 year period and to use it as a council office also. This way, we save on lease costs and we create a space that is accessible for all.
Our Community Centre, located in Florence St (Wynnum), has not been looked after by Council. The gardens are uninviting, access is limited and the place looks like a prison, with it's steel gates! A community Centre should be the hub of any town and we are far from hitting that mark. The organisations that use the building, are so vital to our Bayside. Wynnum Manly Arts, The Historical Society and the Big Band, to name a few. Let's revamp this beautiful building! Fix the gardens, better lighting, more seating and open the carpark space up for markets, events & more
How much greenspace is enough? It's never enough! Greenspace provides so many benefits to a community - it is a reprieve from the concrete jungle, it provides a meeting place for family and friends and creates space to kick a footy, or fly a kite!
All too often, our greenspace is geared toward young kids, but what if we changed that and created spaces for multigenerational and multipurpose use?
Let's encourage all ages to enjoy our greenspace, with not only all inclusive playground equipment, but with reflection gardens, ponds, water features, rock climbing walls, zip lines and creative bike paths.
Do I need to mention White's, Preston, Manly & Ernest roundabout? What a blight that is! dangerous for every one of our students trying to get to school safely! This part of the plan isn't just about potholes and bad road surfaces, but it's about actually getting the job done, when 26 years of Labour have failed! It's about listening to the people who use these roads, who see the dangers and who have been calling for real drastic changes, for decades! This intersection is just one of so many. If you have a road that needs attention, get in touch1
The Greens are for progress, but not at the expense of the environment, or the quality of life for those already living there. Sustainable development & affordable housing are a continuous theme for the Greens, on a National level and has been well documented regarding policies.
For me, it's about ensuring our Bayside is progressing, but also retaining our charm and homes of years gone by. But progress and housing shouldn't just be for one group of people! Affordable and accessible housing is a right for all humans. There's a million things to consider, but what we do know is that developers need to pay their fair share and need to actually provide the right services and housing options, to ensure everyone is catered for. This part of the plan is lengthy, so feel free to email or call for more info.
As a small business owner in Wynnum, since 2015, the one sticking point for encouraging growth, is that no one is working for the bricks and mortar businesses here! I want to encourage new businesses to the Wynnum and Manly business hubs by working with each owner and asking the question - "what new business in that vacant premises, would compliment your shop?" Creating precincts of foodies, retail and services entices visitors to the area. Think of high streets like Bulimba, Newstead and further afield to streets like Lygon St (Melbourne), Oxford St (Darlinghurst) and Brunswick St (Fitzroy)
If we can provide a service where someone from my office actively searches for new business ventures, works with current landlords and real estate agents, we can continue to see Cambridge and the Wynnum CBD expand. The same can be applied to Wynnum West shopping centre, or Wynnum North, where there are great spaces to run events, markets etc - some of which the WW precinct is already doing.
